Messy hands.
Many questions.
Real learning.
This is what growing up at QALA looks like — a thoughtfully designed early learning center in Kolkata for children aged 9 months to 5 years.
"Why we started QALA is different from why most schools are built."
Our own journeys through school were not always easy. We experienced confusion, pressure, and the particular loneliness of feeling unseen in a room full of people. It wasn't until we found the right environments that things began to shift. We flourished. And that contrast never left us.
We kept asking ourselves: what if children didn't have to wait that long? What if the right environment existed from the very beginning? That question became QALA — a place where emotional safety comes before academics, where curiosity isn't rushed, and where a child's instinct to question and explore is treated as the learning.
We believe the early years deserve more intention.
Between 9 months and 5 years, children build the neural pathways, emotional foundations, and thinking habits that shape everything that follows. Our approach draws from Reggio Emilia, IB, and research-backed developmental practice — adapted to the child in front of us.
We don't rush learning
Every child develops at their own rhythm. Some are ready to read at 4. Others need to climb, build, and make sense of the world through their hands first. Both are right. Our educators observe before they guide.
We want your child to feel safe
Children learn best when they feel genuinely secure. Before academics, we ask: does this child feel seen? Do they trust the teachers around them? When the answer is yes, learning follows naturally.
We keep our groups small. Intentionally.
Our 1:6 teacher-to-child ratio exists for one reason: every child deserves personal attention. With six children to one educator, our teachers can observe closely and respond quickly.
Two programs. One commitment.
Whether you're looking for a half-day preschool or full-day support for a working family, QALA is designed with both child and parent in mind.

all the difference.
At QALA, educators are emotionally intelligent, deeply invested in child development, and genuinely curious about the children they work with. We look for educators who observe before they react, who understand that a child's behaviour is always communication.
Formally Trained
Every educator holds a qualification in early childhood education, with a strong grounding in child development and intentional teaching practice.
Emotionally Supportive
We hire for emotional maturity as much as academic qualification. Regulated teachers create regulated classrooms.
Always Learning
Our team participates in ongoing learning, peer reflection, and curriculum reviews to stay sharp and current.
Clear Communicators
With children, with parents, and with each other — communication at QALA is always direct, clear, and respectful.
"How a child feels in a space shapes how they learn in it. That is where we begin."

A school built around how children actually grow.
Childhood is not a rehearsal for adulthood. It is a complete chapter — with its own rhythm, its own meaning, and its own deserved care.
What we stand for.
QALA exists because we believe early childhood deserves more intention. The first five years are not a warm-up — they are the foundation. Every word a child hears, every space they explore, every routine they trust shapes who they become.
We don't measure children against benchmarks. We meet them where they are. We pay attention to the small things — what catches their interest, what calms them down, what makes them laugh. Because that's where learning actually starts.
Our work is to design environments, rhythms, and relationships that allow each child to feel seen, safe, and curious. Everything else flows from there.
We do not measure children against benchmarks. We meet them where they are.
What sets us apart.
Six things parents tell us they notice within the first week.
The Right Pace
Every child develops at their own rhythm. We honour that, every day. No pushing, no rushing, no measuring against averages.
Emotional First
Before academics, before activities — we ask: does this child feel safe and seen? When the answer is yes, learning follows naturally.
Inquiry-Led Curriculum
Children are not given answers. They are invited to ask better questions. Curiosity is the engine — we just keep it well-fueled.
Trained Educators
Every educator is qualified in early childhood and emotionally available. We hire for both — neither alone is enough.
Open Communication
Daily updates, milestone conversations, honest feedback. Always two-way. Always direct. Always with care.
A Calm Space
Our environments are warm, sensory-rich, and intentionally uncluttered. Beautiful, but never overwhelming.
The people behind QALA.
A school is shaped by the people who lead it — and by the philosophies they bring to every decision.
Jyoti Vardhan Sonthalia
Jyoti's vision for QALA is rooted in the belief that early childhood is the most important phase of human development — and that it deserves the best of our intention, design, and care.
With a deep interest in education, child psychology, and meaningful institution-building, he leads the long-term strategy and values that shape every decision at QALA.
Deepa Wadhwa
Deepa brings decades of experience in early childhood education and a genuine love for the work. She leads the day-to-day life of the school — supporting educators, mentoring families, and keeping QALA's pedagogy honest and current.
Her belief is simple: how a child feels in a space shapes how they learn in it. Everything she leads flows from that conviction.
Preschool that doesn't rush, doesn't push, and still goes deep.
Built around how children actually learn — through play, inquiry, movement, and meaningful interaction. For children aged 9 months to 5 years.
A purposeful, joyful day.
Our preschool program is structured but never rigid. Children move through their day with predictable rhythms, gentle transitions, and plenty of room to explore what genuinely interests them.
We don't drill skills. We don't measure children against arbitrary benchmarks. Instead, we observe — closely and continuously — and design experiences that match where each child actually is.
Children leave QALA not just school-ready, but life-ready: confident, curious, kind, and equipped with strong foundations in language, numeracy, and self-regulation.

Preschool questions, answered.
What age group is the preschool for?
Children aged 9 months to 5 years. Our program is designed in age-appropriate stages, with smaller groups and gentler rhythms for our younger children.
What is the teacher-child ratio?
1:6 across all age groups. This is intentional — every child gets individual attention, and educators have time to truly observe each child.
What pedagogical approach do you follow?
Reggio Emilia and Montessori inspired, with elements of the IB framework. We don't subscribe rigidly to one approach — we draw from each based on what serves the child best.
Do children learn reading and writing at QALA?
Yes — in age-appropriate ways. We use structured phonics, pre-writing exercises, and emergent literacy practice. But we don't push children before they're developmentally ready. Reading at 4 is great. Reading at 5 is also great.
How are children assessed?
Through observation. We document each child's interests, milestones, and growth in a portfolio that's shared with parents regularly. No tests, no exams, no rankings.
What does a typical day look like?
Structured but flexible. Arrival and circle time, free exploration, creative activities, story time, outdoor play, and a calm closing. Predictable enough to feel safe, open enough to follow children's interests.
What are the school hours?
Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM for the preschool program. Daycare hours are extended (launching soon).
How do you communicate with parents?
Daily summaries at the end of every day, milestone conversations every term, scheduled open houses, and honest two-way feedback. Communication is structured into the school's core operations — not an afterthought.
Will my child be ready for big school after QALA?
Absolutely. Our children leave with strong foundations in language, numeracy, and self-regulation — but more importantly, with curiosity, confidence, and a real love for learning that serves them anywhere they go next.
Learning is built around how children actually grow.
Our pedagogy is research-backed and child-led — drawing from Reggio Emilia, Montessori, and the IB framework, adapted to the children in front of us.
A philosophy that puts the child first.
At QALA, we don't ask "what should children know by age 4?" We ask "who is this child becoming, and how do we support them?" Our pedagogy is observation-led, curiosity-driven, and grounded in decades of early childhood research.
Six qualities. One whole child.
These are the qualities every QALA child carries with them — not just at school, but everywhere they go.
Curiosity
Confidence
Independence
Creativity
Empathy
Resilience

About our approach.
What pedagogical framework does QALA follow?
Our curriculum draws from Reggio Emilia, Montessori, and the IB framework. We adapt these to the children in front of us rather than apply them rigidly. Every framework has wisdom — and limits. We use what serves the child.
How is QALA different from a traditional preschool?
Traditional preschools often focus on outcomes — reading by 3, writing letters by 4. We focus on the process: how children think, feel, and engage. That's what predicts long-term success, not the speed of early-life milestones.
What does Reggio Emilia mean in practice?
Children are seen as capable, curious learners. The environment is treated as a "third teacher." Documentation of children's work is taken seriously. Parents are partners. Inquiry leads instruction — not the other way around.
Why do small groups matter?
With a 1:6 ratio, our educators can observe closely, intervene meaningfully, and respond to each child as an individual. Bigger groups force generalisation. Small groups allow attention.
Do you give homework?
No. The early years should not be about academic homework. We do encourage parents to continue conversations and explorations at home — but as natural extensions of curiosity, not assigned tasks.
What if my child needs more academic challenge?
We extend curiosity, not difficulty. A 4-year-old reading early gets richer books and deeper questions — not arbitrary grade-level acceleration. The goal is to keep them genuinely engaged, not artificially advanced.
How do you measure progress?
Portfolio documentation, milestone tracking, ongoing observation, and regular parent conversations. We share what we see — clearly and honestly — without grades or rankings.
Is QALA play-based?
Yes — but play at QALA is purposeful. Every play activity is designed with developmental intent. Play isn't the opposite of learning. For young children, it's the most powerful form of learning.
QALA Daycare is on its way.

Daycare questions, answered.
When is daycare launching?
Daycare is launching soon. Sign up above to be among the first to know when admissions open and when we welcome our first children through the door.
Will daycare follow the same approach as preschool?
Yes. Same philosophy, same standards, same warmth. The only difference is more time in the day and a different rhythm — designed around full-day care.
What ages will daycare accept?
9 months to 5 years, just like our preschool program.
What will the hours be?
Extended hours designed for working families. Specific hours will be announced at launch.
Will meals be provided?
Yes. Healthy, structured meals are part of the daily routine — and meal times are themselves a learning opportunity for self-help skills and shared rhythm.
How will rest time work?
Structured rest periods built naturally into the day. Our daycare design accounts for the developmental need for quiet, restful time — without making it feel forced.
Will I get the same daily updates?
Yes. Daily summaries are core to QALA's philosophy and won't change for daycare.
Can I tour the daycare space before enrolling?
Absolutely. Once we open enrolment, campus visits will be available. We'll announce details on this page and via the email signup above.
